Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need to commit?

The new member process will require at least three hours a week for six weeks. However, we can work our schedule with yours. As a sister, it depends on your role within the Sorority. If you are president, vice president, etc. you will have different responsibilities than someone who holds a staff position. Ultimately, how much time you commit is up to you.

What if the idea of dues is too overwhelming?

The perception that fraternities and sororities are only an option for “rich” students is widespread and false. Greek organizations are quite affordable and fees go to services that will positively impact members. We understand this financial investment in, but we do not want the money to be the reason you miss this opportunity. The Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation offers thousands annually in scholarships ranging from $450 to $2,250 to our undergraduate membership. Further, payment plans can be easily established to ease the responsibility of dues.

Can I avoid the "Sorority stereotype?"

Internationally, many organizations are dispelling the negative stereotypes through programming and initiatives. At UMass Lowell, you can be a part of changing the sorority image by joining an organization which aims at treating all people with respect. Alpha Sigma tau does not haze; we believe hazing has nothing to do with bonding or friendship. At its best, hazing builds resentment between new members and initiates, and at its worst, hazing can seriously injure or kill. Alpha Sigma Tau also does not discriminate. We strive for a membership body based on character, not color, shape, or background.

How will I be able to balance academics and the sorority?

The sorority experience is strengthened by academics, and we mutually support and assist each other to excel in classes. Alpha Sigma Tau believes in devotion to the cultivation of the intellect, and therefore, the experience will not come at the expense of the student's academic pursuits.

What are the requirements for joining?

Potential new members are required to be a student at UMass Lowell and have at least a 2.8 college grade point average or, for newly incoming freshman, a 3.0 grade point average both on a 4.0 scale. If you are ineligible to receive a bid from Alpha Sigma Tau due to these reasons, get to know us while you work hard to reach our requirements.
