Our Sisters in Action
In addition to national partners, collegiate chapters also support local causes through philanthropic fundraising and hands-on service on their campuses and in their local communities.
The Beta Tau chapter is committed to helping the community around us, in many different ways. Through volunteering, fundraising, and more, we do what we can to support the community we call home.
Women's Wellness Week
This past fall, Beta Tau debuted our inaugural Women's Wellness Week, hosting a series of events on campus in honor of our national philanthropy throughout the second week of the fall semester. Women's Wellness Week shined light several aspects of women's wellness, including but not limited to mental health and wellness, physical health and wellness, professional wellness, spiritual wellness, social wellness, occupational wellness, and intellectual wellness. Our events featured a yoga session, a wage negotiation workshop, a panel conversation in women's wellness, a mental health tabling event, and a bale sale for Alpha Sigma Tau's newest partnership, Girls Who Code.
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes
Every fall semester, our chapter hosts an Annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. By teaming up with Campus Advocates for Prevention Education, we host a fun, informative, and engaging march for men to put on a pair of red high heels and to increase awareness about sexual violence, especially violence against women. Each year, we raise hundreds of dollars for the Center for Hope and Healing in Lowell.
Painting with the Taus
This past March, our chapter hosted our second annual Painting With the Tau's in memory of our late sister, Kylie Inman. At the end of our paint night, our chapter raised over $6000 for the Boston Center for Endometriosis and had a great time honoring our beloved sister.
Up 'Til Dawn
Every fall, our sisters participate in our campus's Saint Jude Up Til' Dawn event. We gather teams of six and compete all night to help raise money and awareness for the children at Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. This year, three of our sisters served on the Up 'Til Dawn Executive Board on campus. As a whole, UMass Lowell raised over $60,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this year. Alpha Sigma Tau was awarded as Top Fundraising Greek Organization, raising over $8,000. We greatly appreciate our alumnae, friends, and families who donated to our teams to help us raise so much money!
Take Back the Night
Our chapter also attends Lowell's Take Back the Night every April, to take back the safety of our community from sexual violence.
Lowell Community Service
The Beta Tau chapter has decided to focus its volunteer efforts between two local Lowell organizations, the Lowell House of Hope and the Lowell Wish Project. Once a week, our chapter volunteers at the Lowell House of Hope, which is dedicated to helping homeless families in Massachusetts gain stable housing.
Once a month, our chapter volunteers at the Lowell Wish Project to help sort clothing, put together back to school bags for the children and more. The Wish Project is a critical resource for furniture, household goods and baby needs serving these families in need. With support from The Wish Project they are able to manage their expenses, reducing the likelihood of becoming homeless again.
